Virginia Tech Men’s Basketball has become the latest program to add a Class of 2022 player who could be eligible this fall to its roster, gaining a commitment from Clemson transfer Butta Johnson.
Johnson committed to the Hokies after spending last season at Clemson plus three years previously at UAB, two of which he was a starter for. He is expected to join the South Carolina state court lawsuit related to additional Class of 2022 eligibility and seek to gain it via the injunction that the plaintiffs who are currently part of that lawsuit have received.
The 6’4’’ Johnson averaged 6.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 21.1 minutes per game off the bench for Clemson last season, playing in 35 games with nine starts for the Tigers. He also shot 38.5% from the field including 35.5% from three-point range plus 83.0% from the free-throw line.
Johnson is a nice addition who will certainly add some proven power conference level depth to the Hokies at a minimum. If he is eligible come the start of the season, he could push for a starting role on the wing with Tyler Johnson, though I would still give the edge to FAU transfer Isaiah Elohim at this time.
With Johnson committing, Virginia Tech’s 2026-27 men’s basketball roster is set pending Johnson’s eligibility gaining clarity. If he isn’t eligible by the time the season starts, then VT’s only path to filling his spot would be via a transfer who is still available after not finding a home in the offseason and could join the Hokies midseason.
