The matchup between the Hokies and the Hawkeyes will take place on Tuesday, November 10th at Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
This will be a neutral site game even though the game is taking place in the Hawkeyes' home state. Something to note is that Sioux City is 4.5 hours away from Iowa City and is located on the border with Nebraska. Sioux City is actually slightly closer to Kansas' Allen Fieldhouse than it is to Iowa's Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
This will be the fifth time that the Hokies and Hawkeyes have faced off in men's college basketball with the Hokies having a perfect 4-0 record against Iowa. All four matchups have happened this century with the most recent happening on November 28, 2017 when the Hokies beat the Hawkeyes 79-55 in Blacksburg as part of the ACC/Big 10 Challenge.
VT will very likely be the underdogs against an Iowa team that is coming off an Elite Eight run this season and is on a strong trajectory under Ben McCollum. Nonetheless, this is a strong game for VT to add to its non-conference schedule that will very likely be a Quad 1 game and will boost VT's strength of schedule metrics regardless of the result.
The trip to Iowa now is one of VT's headline non-conference games on a schedule that still has openings for a few more games to be added. Here's where the non-conference schedule currently stands.
- 11/3: Home vs Coppin State (Tuesday)
- 11/10: Neutral (Sioux City, IA) vs Iowa (Tuesday)
- November: Charleston Classic (two games)
- 11/27: Home vs Old Dominion (Friday)
- 12/1: Home vs Ole Miss (ACC/SEC Challenge) (Tuesday)
- 12/10: Home vs Maryland Eastern Shore (Thursday)
- 12/13: Home vs Radford (Sunday)
