An influx of talent has entered the transfer portal after preliminary injunction court rulings yesterday gave any Class of 2022 college athlete who was out of eligibility but hadn't redshirted an extra year of eligibility. That has had a large impact on college basketball where many players do not redshirt and therefore gained an extra year of eligibility.
Many schools who have one or two spots open on their roster still are now aggressively looking at their options including Virginia Tech who has shown interest in an all-conference mid-major frontcourt transfer per reports.
South Dakota C Cameron Fens has received interest from Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Auburn, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Washington, UCF, New Mexico State, Fresno State, and Tarleton State according to The Portal Report.
This comes after the 7'0'' Fens had a standout senior season at South Dakota during which he averaged 14.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks in 25.3 minutes per game while shooting 57.9% from the field and 58.5% from the free-throw line. He led the Summit League in rebounds and blocks per game last season on his way to earning All-Summit League First Team and Defensive Team honors.
Fens faced three power conference opponents last season with varying results.
- 11/5/25 at Creighton: 6 points (3-11 FG, 0-2 FT), 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, 22 minutes
- 11/20/25 at Missouri: 9 points (3-5 FG, 3-4 FT), 5 rebounds, 1 block, 1 steal, 20 minutes
- 12/20/25 at Kansas State: 17 points (7-11 FG, 3-6 FT), 6 rebounds, 1 steal, 21 minutes
He would be an intriguing late addition for the Hokies who could certainly push San Diego State transfer Miles Heide for the starting center job while also battling NC State transfer Musa Sagnia for minutes off the bench at worst. He would also provide a higher ceiling as a shot blocker than Heide and Sagnia have shown so far in their careers. However, he would also be coming from a lower level of DI hoops and have a bigger adjustment to make.
For all schools, it is a risk to pursue these Class of 2022 newly eligible transfers as they currently are only eligible via a preliminary injunction from a court and the NCAA intends to take these cases to court where a final ruling could overturn the injunction and makes these athletes immediately ineligible. Each school and program will obviously have to evaluate the risks and benefits for themselves and make a decision knowing the full court case could cause players who for now are eligible to no longer be so.
Virginia Tech is actively evaluating its options to fill its last roster spot following yesterday's court rulings, with Fens being a name to monitor at this time.
