While Virginia Tech's primary recruiting territory includes the East Coast from New Jersey to Florida, the Hokies aren't afraid to look to places like the Midwest to find talent. Yesterday, Holmon Wiggins was in St Louis with many Hokie fans wondering why he was there.
However, that answer became clear later that evening.
Virginia Tech offered a pair of 2020 recruits from East Saint Louis, Illinois: WR Lawaun Powell and S Antonio Johnson. VT is the first offer for both of these recruits. Neither of these recruits are currently ranked though their VT offers will likely bring them more attention. Johnson told us that his offer was a "surprise."
Johnson and Powell recently stood out at a recruiting camp in Chicago according to 247 Sports
' analyst Allen Trieu with both appearing likely to receive more Power 5 offers soon. In the meantime, the Hokies have positioned themselves well in the very early stages as the first to offer Johnson and Powell.
However, that wasn't the only reason for Wiggins's Midwest trip.
Wiggins also stopped by Cardinal Ritter College Prep in St Louis. The Hokies were likely there to visit 2019 four-star WR Jameson Williams who holds 28 offers including a VT offer according to 247 Sports
. Williams appears to still be a top WR target, especially with Wiggins making the trip to visit him yesterday.
Wiggins, Justin Fuente, and much of the VT staff likely has some connections in the St Louis area from their times at Memphis. Wiggins, Fuente, Vance Vice, and Galen Scott also likely have a lot of familiarity with the area from their time at Illinois State.
The St. Louis area traditionally hasn't been a place where Virginia Tech has spent a lot of time recruiting. However, that appears to be at least changing a little with Wiggins making a trip to visit Jameson Williams and send out a pair of 2020 offers.
