When it was announced that Alabama
would be the final playoff team, it opened the door for Virginia Tech to go to Orlando for the Camping World Bowl
with a Big 10 team in the Orange Bowl opening the Citrus Bowl for Notre Dame.
As we predicted earlier today, the Hokies will be headed to Orlando for their bowl game.
Virginia Tech will face Oklahoma State in the 2017 Camping World Bowl. This is the second time that VT has played in the Camping World Bowl with the first time coming in 2012 when VT beat Rutgers 13-10 in overtime. This is the third time Virginia Tech and Oklahoma State have played with OSU winning in Stillwater in 1971, and the Hokies beating the Cowboys in Blacksburg in 1972.
This matchup between VT and Oklahoma State should be one of the few non-New Year's Six bowl games featuring two ranked teams. This game also presents a fascinating matchup between the Hokies' elite defense and Oklahoma State's high-powered offense while also creating an intriguing coaching matchup between Mike Gundy and Bud Foster.
While VT may be seen as underdogs by many, we've seen this matchup already play out of once earlier this season when the Hokies faced a high-powered West Virginia offense
but a not so great defense. Josh Jackson struggled in November, but should benefit from not having to face a tough defensive challenge just like he did against West Virginia.
For fans, this is a great destination to get what will be a bigger stage earlier in the bowl season. This is also an ideal slot with the game being right in between Christmas and New Year's Day and another great reward for Hokie fans after last year's convenient trip to Charlotte.
