Following the departure of Kenny Brooks to Kentucky, Virginia Tech had their first transfer portal departure in backup rising sophomore point guard Samyha Suffren, according to Mark Berman of the Roanoke Times.

Suffren had a very limited role as a freshman playing in 15 games while averaging 1.5 points, 0.9 rebounds, and 0.9 assists in 6.9 minutes per game. She has three years of eligibility remaining plus a redshirt year.

Suffren wasn't expected to start next season, but she was expected to have a larger role for the 2024-25 season as potentially the first guard off the bench with Carleigh Wenzel starting at the point for the Hokies. Long term, Suffren was set to battle Mackenzie Nelson, who redshirted this past season, to be the Hokies' starting point guard down the road.

Obviously, we're still a long way from seeing what Tech's 2024-25 roster will look like as we await to see who the next head coach of the Hokies will be. As of now, it's reasonable to expect that Tech will look for a point guard or at least a combo guard similar to Carleigh Wenzel to add more on-ball depth beyond Wenzel and Nelson for next season. That's assuming that Georgia Amoore heads to the WNBA, which seems likely especially with Kenny Brooks leaving for Kentucky.

Suffren will certainly have plenty of suitors at the power conference level, with it being easy to envision places like Kentucky and Clemson possibly pursuing her given that each of their head coaches played a role in recruiting Suffren to VT, though that's purely speculation.
