The Preseason AP Top 25 poll has been released ahead of the NCAA basketball season, and the Virginia Tech Hokies find themselves ranked No. 15. Tech finished the 2017-18 season receiving votes in the AP Poll, but was never ranked in the Top 25.
The No. 15 ranking ties the program best for highest preseason ranking, according to Mark Berman of the Roanoke Times. It is the first time the team has received a preseason ranking since the 2010 season and just the fourth time ever.
The last time the Hokies were ranked in the AP Top 25 was Jan. 7, 2017, when the team was ranked No. 21. The Hokies lost 93-78 to Florida State that day, and subsequently dropped out of the rankings.
Other ACC teams that received rankings are No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Virginia, No. 8 North Carolina, No. 16 Syracuse, No. 17 Florida State and No. 22 Clemson. The Hokies’ earliest possible Top 25 matchup would be during the Charleston Classic, when they could face No. 24 Purdue if both teams make it to the championship on Nov. 18. The Hokies will face No. 25 Washington at the Boardwalk Classic on Dec. 15 in Atlantic City, N.J.
Of the other ranked ACC teams, Virginia Tech will host Duke and Syracuse at Cassell Coliseum and will play North Carolina, Clemson and Florida State on the road. The Hokies will play at in-state rival Virginia on Jan. 15 before hosting the Cavaliers on Feb. 18, a Big Monday game that will be broadcast on ESPN.
The Hokies get their season started when they host Gardner-Webb on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.
