Virginia Tech's rushing attack has been their offensive strength this season with the 1-2 RB punch of Marcellous Hawkins and Terion Stewart plus a power-running QB in Kyron Drones. Both running backs are averaging just around six yards per carry while Drones is averaging just under four per carry.

Meanwhile, in the game against Louisville, there was a new face added to the formula in four-star freshman Jeffrey Overton Jr, arguably the most highly-touted recruit that the Hokies signed to their 2025 high school class.

In high school, he ran for over 8,000 career rushing yards and had 83 total touchdowns. Many programs were vying for Overton's services, but he opted to stay in-state and commit to Virginia Tech in what was a massive recruiting victory that only looked better as time passed by.

The Woodbridge native was able to have his debut in his freshman year after battling back from a season-ending injury in his senior year in high school.

After a long wait, Overton found the field for the first time this season and notched four carries for nine yards during Virginia Tech's 28-16 loss to then No. 16 Louisville. Overall, Tech was happy to see Overton be able to make his debut and show off his potential.

“I thought he [Jeff Overton Jr.] stepped up, especially as a young guy. Got his feet wet… was good to see him have an opportunity to get [...] on the field,” interim head coach Phillip Montgomery on Overton’s debut. “He did some good things, especially for the first time stepping in there and truly seeing college action.”
