Virginia Tech football fans spoke and the team listened. The Hokies will take the field this weekend wearing all maroon uniforms, but with a twist.
Virginia Tech will don an all maroon combo featuring the matte maroon helmets which were broken out for the season opener against Florida State. Lots of fans had been speculating all week that the team would break out its all maroon combination for a primetime Saturday night home game, and they will get their wish when kickoff comes against Notre Dame.
The FSU game is the only time the Hokies have won the matte maroon helmets this season. The maroon jerseys have been worn once, in the home opening win over William and Mary. Virginia Tech won that game 62-17. The maroon pants were worn for the first time this season during last week’s 31-14 win at No. 22 Duke.
If you’re superstitious and like to read into how well a team does in a particular uniform, you should like this combination for Saturday’s game. The Hokies have not lost yet this season when wearing anything maroon in their uniform. In the loss at ODU, the uniform featured white helmets, orange jerseys and white pants.
According to the Virginia Tech Uniform Builder on cruhland.com, the last two times the Hokies have worn this uniform combo have been night games against Top 25 opponents West Virginia and Clemson.
I think this is the right combination to go with for a game as big as this one. A Top-10 opponent coupled with the 8 p.m. ABC game is a good enough reason to break out the fan favorite uniforms. Lane will be rocking, “Enter Sandman” will be pumping through the speakers, and the Hokies will be running through the tunnel wearing the most hype uniform combination they have.
Virginia Tech will take the field at 8 p.m. on Saturday to face No. 6 Notre Dame.
