This is the headline game on December 17th in a quadruple-header in Charlotte of non-conference matchups that also includes NC State-Richmond, Wake Forest-Charlotte, and East Carolina-Liberty. The Hokies are 11-5 against the Bonnies with Tech winning the two most recent games during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.
The Bonnies are returning almost everyone from a team that reached the NCAA Tournament this past season similar to Virginia Tech. Given the returning talent and the way-too-early projections, it would not be surprising at all if this does end up being a top 25 matchup.
One thing that held Tech back at times in NCAA Tournament seeding under Buzz Williams was a weak non-conference strength of schedule. That's changed under Mike Young with Tech adding this game to a slate that includes facing two of Memphis, Xavier, and Iowa State in the 2021 NIT Tip-Off tournament next fall as well plus an ACC-Big 10 Challenge game.
