Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry announced today that senior tight end and captain Nick Gallo is out for the season due to injury.

Gallo's status was up in the air over the past week or so after suffering this injury late in fall camp with the captain missing the season opener against Old Dominion. Pry elaborated that it's a knee injury specifically that was suffered on a non-contact play.

It remains to be seen if Gallo will pursue a medical redshirt to return for one more season in 2024.

This is disappointing news for Gallo who brings a lot both as a blocker especially but also as a receiver who just came off his best receiving season in 2022 during which he had 30 catches for 256 yards.

With Gallo out, Benji Gosnell and DaeQuan Wright will continue to take on the lead tight end roles with Harrison Saint Germain also getting some playing time. Pry also hinted in his comments that a fourth tight end could also play with true freshman Zeke Wimbush being a possibility in that regard.

Gosnell played well in his Hokie debut with a 23-yard reception plus some quality blocking outside the box while DaeQuan Wright was a little up and down finishing with a 14-yard reception though he also had a couple drops. Tech will need both of them to play at a high level going forward and though they may be young, they both have tons of upside.
