After years, if not decades, of made-up rumors about Metallica coming to Lane Stadium full of fake aliases for hotels and rumored flights into the region, the legendary band is finally making their way to Lane Stadium for a concert.

Virginia Tech's Lane Stadium was revealed as the host for one stop of their M72 World Tour that will go to stadiums across the country. Metallica will make their stop in Blacksburg on May 7th, 2025, with tickets set to begin going on sale next week. Current Virginia Tech students and Hokie Club members are among those who will get priority access before tickets go on sale to the general public.

Based on my research, this will only be the second concert in Lane Stadium history. The only other one come on September 6th, 2007 with the Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Phil Vassar, and NAS. This is undoubtedly a historic moment in Lane Stadium history and given that the full stadium will be open in addition to seating on the field, this will certainly be the highest-attended event ever at Lane Stadium.

Virginia Tech deserves plenty of credit for getting this event together, an event that will bring a significant boost economically to the region given the popularity of Metallica and how far and wide people will travel to attend one of their concerts.

VT and Metallica also deserve credit for negotiating into the deal that the North End Zone would be fully sold as student tickets along with portions of the Upper South End Zone. In an era where it's hard for lots of people to be able to afford tickets to the biggest musical acts in the world, this is a great move to allow Tech students a more affordable path to doing so.

In some ways, this maybe shouldn't be as big of a surprise given the merchandise branding deal that Virginia Tech and Metallica announced earlier this year. In hindsight, that was the first sign that something even bigger was in the works.
