James Franklin's recruiting surge continued on Saturday, when wideout AJ Roberts committed to Virginia Tech.

The 6-foot-2, 185 pound Rolesville, North Carolina native is the seventh member of the Hokies' class of 2027. He's rated as a four-star prospect by Rivals, and a three-star recruit by both 247 and ESPN. All three services rank him inside the top-20 players in the state.
Playing for Rolesville High School, Roberts caught 46 passes for 914 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2024. He then followed up that campaign with 35 catches for 656 yards and 9 touchdowns this past season as a junior.
Roberts is a two-sport athlete for Rolesville, where he averaged 15.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.2 steals on the hardwood this past season.
He committed to the Hokies after visiting Blacksburg in March and again during Virginia Tech's Spring Game. In addition to Virginia Tech, the other contenders in his top five schools included Rutgers, Florida State, Duke, and Wake Forest. He received offers from Miami, Louisville, Boston College, North Carolina, South Carolina, NC State, and Virginia, among others.
