Buzz Williams and the Virginia Tech Hokies are shifting their focus in recruiting mostly to the Class of 2017 as they still try to fill their final roster spot for the 2016-2017 basketball season. However, that doesn't mean that the Hokies haven't been doing some recruiting beyond the Class of 2017 and today, they received some big recruiting news.

North Carolina 2018 guard Jarren McAllister of Heritage High School has committed to the Virginia Tech Hokies today. Virginia Tech was the first to offer the 2018 guard while VCU became the second yesterday and while McAllister seems likely to receive a lot more offers, he was ready to commit now.
Current Virginia Tech point guard Justin Robinson and coach Buzz Williams were both excited about McAllister's commitment as well.

Some may see this as very surprising to see a 2018 guy commit this early and while it isn't common, it's not that out of the ordinary in basketball to see this happen though it still is a little surprising given that McAllister only has two offers and that list is likely to grow.
For Williams and the Hokies, this is definitely a great way to start recruiting for the Class of 2018 as the Hokies will now have a 2018 that can help recruit some of their other top 2018 targets for the 18 to 24 months.
It's definitely a surprise to get a Class of 2018 commit this far out but Jarren McAllister is definitely a welcome addition that now has the chance to personally make a big impact on the recruiting trail getting some other top guys over the next couple of years.
