The Virginia Tech men’s basketball season begins in a little less than a month. As tip-off draws near, there is more activity coming out of the program. The team held its media day last week and this week has already provided some noteworthy news. Below is some of the recent news from Hokies Hoops.
Virginia Tech to play Liberty in exhibition
The team announced on Monday that it would play an exhibition hurricane relief game against Liberty on Nov. 4 in Lynchburg. The game will take place at the Vines Center and will benefit victims of Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael. This is the second year in a row that the Hokies have participated in a hurricane relief game after playing South Carolina last year to benefit victims of hurricanes that affected much of the country. "It is honor to be able to participate in this meaningful event," Virginia Tech head coach Buzz Williams said in a press release. "Hurricanes and their aftermaths have effected this region and this country greatly during the last few months. To be able to play an exhibition game and help people in need, is the right thing to do. Coach McKay and the Liberty University community have done a great job in helping those in need and I am glad we are able to contribute, as well. Our fans, who may not be able to attend the game, have the opportunity to give through the online link. We need all of Hokie Nation to get involved and help these people." Tickets for the exhibition matchup will cost $10 for the public and $5 for students and can be purchased through Liberty’s ticket office. All proceeds from the game will go towards relief efforts.Robinson makes Cousy Award watch list
Virginia Tech senior Justin Robinson was named to the 2019 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award watch list earlier this week. The award honors the top point guard in Division I men’s basketball and is determined by a national committee of college basketball personnel. The initial watch list is made up of 20 players from around the country and will be narrowed down throughout the season. The committee narrows the list to 10 players in February before five finalists are named in March. The finalists will be presented to Bob Cousy and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee and the winner will be announced at the College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy’s on April 12, 2019. Robinson averaged 14 points per game and 5.6 assists last season, leading Virginia Tech in both categories. He also averaged 2.8 rebounds per game as he led the Hokies to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season. He currently has the fifth-most assists in Virginia Tech history, entering the season with 435. Other ACC players to be named to the watch list are Boston College’s Ky Bowman, Duke’s Tre Jones and Virginia’s Ty Jerome.Hokies make Top 5 for 2019 recruit Felder
Three-star 2019 PF/SF Calvin Felder has named his top five college choices, and Virginia Tech made the list. Felder is also considering Murray State, Boston College, Georgia Tech and LSU. The 6-7, 185-pound Felder comes from Sumter High School in South Carolina. He is listed at 36 on the list of 2019 power forwards and the fifth-best 2019 recruit in South Carolina, according to 247Sports. Virginia Tech currently has two commits for the class of 2019, neither of whom are listed as forwards. According to his Twitter account, Felder will make his decision later this week.
