Virginia Tech Commit Jahad Carter Will Not Sign On National Signing Day

Helmet 1

After not signing during the Early Signing Window, The Tech Lunch Pail has been informed by Henrico HS AD Robert Welch that three-star ATH and Virginia Tech commit Jahad Carter will not be signing tomorrow on National Signing Day.

The news doesn't rule out the possibility of Carter enrolling with Virginia Tech in the summer, but that does seem very unlikely in this case since this doesn't appear to be by choice based on our understanding from sources. From what we've previously heard, it does appear that the reason for him not signing now is likely academic-related. If that is the case, Carter could go to a prep school for a semester to get his academics in shape and preserve in his full eligibility. If he does go the prep school route, don't be surprised if Virginia Tech pushes him towards Fork Union where the Hokies have a long history there. That includes Silas Dzansi and Christian Darrisaw both spending a semester there after committing (and signing) with VT out of high school most recently. Of course, the major difference would be that those 2 were signed to a NLI while Carter would not be tied to Virginia Tech and would still be free to consider other programs even if it would be unlikely for Carter to flip his commitment elsewhere. If he goes the junior college route, it would make it tougher for the Hokies to bring him into the fold due to ACC rules about non-qualifiers out of high school. That only would apply for Carter through the JUCO route though and not in the case of a prep school semester. Carter has been the Hokies' longest commit of their 2019 class after choosing the Hokies in September of 2017. Carter was projected to play either wide receiver or defensive back though given the current state of the Hokies' roster, defensive back seemed more likely to be his first spot.
