Our countdown of the top 10 Hokies from the 2017 season as voted by The Tech Lunch Pail staff continues at #2 with Cam Phillips.
After playing alongside Isaiah Ford and Bucky Hodges the past three years, Cam Phillips got his chance to be the primary playmaker on offense, and the senior wide receiver shined on his way to breaking multiple school records.
Phillips was the Hokies' star offensive player leading VT with 71 receptions for 964 yards and 7 receiving touchdowns. All three of those stats led the Hokies while his 7 receiving touchdowns and 13.6 yards per reception average were career highs. Because of his big senior season, Phillips became the Hokies' all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards.
What makes this even more impressive is the fact that Phillips played with a sports hernia injury throughout the regular season before having surgery that kept him out of the bowl game
Phillips was one of the best WRs in the country, earning All-ACC First Team honors
for the first time in his career. This wasn't a big surprise as Phillips met expectations and then some after being a Preseason All-ACC selection.
Phillips may not be the most athletic player, but Phillips was consistently a big play threat due to his speed. His route-running was among the best receivers in the nation and helped him gain some extra space that gave Josh Jackson some easy passes. Despite his size, Phillips also won some 50-50 balls, showing plenty of toughness and a good vertical that will interest NFL scouts.
Looking ahead to the NFL Draft, Phillips is likely to be a day 3 pick with scouts interested to see how he looks at the NFL Combine if he is able to participate after his surgery. Phillips's ability to work out of the slot and on the outside will help his stock along with the fact that he had a very good collegiate career against quality ACC competition.
