Defensive lineman Ian Mathews has been one of the fastest-rising recruits in the 2021 class this fall after starting it with no FBS offers and now holding 7 Power 5 offers including one from Virginia Tech.

Unsurprisingly, Mathews is also a top remaining 2021 target for the Hokies with Tech looking to get bigger all over the defensive line and Mathews representing just that at 6'5'' and 290 pounds according to 247 Sports.

Now, Mathews is getting closer to trimming down his recruitment to a top 5 and told us when he is planning to do that.

"I plan to release it last game of the regular season or the day of our rival game," Mathews said.

The dates for those games are November 13th and 20th which means teams battling for him still have a few more weeks to try to make his cut down. He also knows what it would take for teams to make his top 5.

"The teams that show me that they want me there to play, not to just be an extra body on the team," Mathews said.

The good news for the Hokies is that they seem likely to make that cut saying that the Hokies "are one of the schools that I would go to." He elaborated on why that's the case as well.

"They showed me everything I needed to know about the school during a virtual visit and they had the things I was looking for in the school I want to go to," Mathews said.

Defensive line coach and Hokie Hall of Famer Darryl Tapp is leading the recruiting push for the Hokies with Tapp building a strong relationship with Ian Mathews as Mathews told us.

"It's great. We talk every week and he just checks up on me and the family," Mathews said.

Looking ahead, Mathews doesn't have a decision date yet though he did say that he will "probably" try to make one in time to sign during the currently-scheduled December signing window. Whenever he does decide to commit somewhere, he knows what the key factors will be.

"If the school truly fits me, if the academics are good, and how the community is," Mathews said.

Virginia Tech is right in the hunt for Ian Mathews who embodies how the Hokies are trying to get bigger on the defensive line and is a top uncommitted target regardless of position.
