The Virginia Tech Hokies Women's Basketball program has its first commit for the 2025 class as 5'9'' PG Kate Sears out of Boone, NC has committed to the Hokies.

Sears chose the Hokies over other offers from Michigan, Clemson, Marquette, Kansas, Wake Forest, Purdue, Boston College, Princeton, Tulsa, and more. She will likely be a piece that Megan Duffy will look to build around as part of her first full cycle recruiting class with the Hokies.

As a junior, Sears averaged 23.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 2.2 steals per game as one of the most dominant high school women's basketball players in the Carolinas. For her high school career to date, Sears has averaged 21.0 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 2.0 steals per game.

This is a strong first get in this class for Megan Duffy who staved off some strong challengers to land her commitment. Additionally, this is an encouraging sign for a head coach who may not have many Mid-Atlantic and Southeast ties in her coaching background, but built a staff that has plenty of roots in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.

Virginia Tech's current 2025-26 roster is now projected to have four point guard-first players in Samyha Suffren, Mackenzie Nelson, Leila Wells, and Sears. It seems clear that Duffy wants to make sure that she never has to worry about having enough options at the point guard should injuries pop up.

Given the projected 2025-26 roster, Tech should be done at point guard for this recruiting class. The focus now will likely shift further onto landing a wing and a frontcourt addition given that Matilda Ekh and Rose Micheaux will both be out of eligibility after this upcoming season. Given that Tech only has 10 of their 15 scholarships taken up currently for the 2025-26 team, there's plenty of room to take a large class and have space for transfer additions after next season.
