Wells joins 6'3'' forward Myah Hazelton as the now second member of Virginia Tech's current 2024 signing class following the departures of four-star SG Lexi Blue and Portuguese C Clara Silva, both of whom followed Kenny Brooks to Kentucky. To allow this to happen, Wells obviously was released from the National Letter of Intent that she had previously signed with Marquette to allow this to happen.
Back when Wells originally signed with Marquette, Megan Duffy had the following to say about her per the Marquette press release this past fall.
"Leila brings an incredible toughness and hard-nosed mentality," Duffy said. "She's been the glue on her AAU Team Legends U with her ability to impact winning. Leila can wreak havoc on the defensive end and single handedly change the tempo of a game. Fans will love her ability to knock down the three and use her dynamic athleticism to get downhill."
Wells was a two-time All-State player in high school in Michigan who scored well over 1,000 points during her high school career. She also won a state title in the 100 meter hurdles in 2022, showcasing her versatile athleticism.
The 5'9'' guard gives the Hokies more point guard depth on the roster with Samyha Suffren and Mackenzie Nelson also returning. There will be undoubtedly be competition for the starting PG role while it's definitely possible that Wells redshirts this upcoming season.
With Wells' addition, this puts the Hokies at eight scholarship players for next season, giving Megan Duffy and her staff seven more scholarships to work with.
