New York has officially joined the growing list of states that offers or soon will offer legal online sports betting to its residents. On Nov. 8, nine mobile sportsbooks were given access to operate in the state.

Sports betting in New York will soon become easier than ever, with sportsbooks expected to launch sometime in early 2022. However, there are a few caveats. Most notably, the rules and regulations around betting on college sporting events in New York. Like Virginia, there will be some restrictions on betting on college sports in Virginia.

Individual states and their governing bodies are free to structure sports betting laws within their state as they see fit. Like states before (such as New Jersey and Virginia), New York is enforcing a few restrictions as it pertains to betting on college sports.

New York sportsbooks cannot allow wagering on events that involve college athletes from the state, regardless of the location of the event. Additionally, New York sportsbooks cannot allow wagering on college sporting events that take place inside state lines, even if it does not include a New York college or university.

Simply put, fans and bettors cannot bet on New York college teams or events. This type of restriction is becoming more and more common throughout the country. For example, Virginia does not allow for wagering on Virginia-based college programs.

College Sports Betting Wager Types

Betting on college sports ultimately is like betting on professional sporting events as it really just depends on the sport itself and the nature of the event. Nevertheless, arguably the two most popular college sports to be on are football and basketball.

On sportsbooks such as DraftKings, FanDuel, WynnBET, and Caesars you can expect to see standard wager types listed such as moneyline bets, point spread bets, and over/unders. Additionally, sportsbooks may offer lines on each half, various player prop bets, and futures odds for the College Football Playoff and March Madness.

Betting on college sports in New York is available provided that the event isn’t in New York and/or does not include athletes from New York schools. To bet on college sports, you’ll need to sign up at one of the nine licensed sportsbooks in New York.

They are FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, BallyBet, Rush Street Interactive, Caesars Sportsbook, Resorts World, WynnBet, and PointsBet.

New York sportsbooks will undoubtedly offer new players sign-up bonuses to attract sports bettors to their app. For instance, by looking at what Caesars has offered new customers in other states we expect the Caesars New York promo to be a bet-match of up to $1,001.

Promotions at other sportsbooks, such as DraftKings, may include a free bet and/or a deposit match bonus.

In summary, New York sportsbooks are expected to be ready to accept their first patrons and wagers sometime in January or February of 2022 — just in time for March Madness and perhaps during college football bowl season — and residents can surely expect a variety of new sign-up bonuses to choose from to help them get started.
