Virginia Tech demolished North Carolina 59-7 in what may have been their most dominant performance of the Justin Fuente era. There were plenty of standout performances in this game, but three players stood out to be our Hokies of the Game.
Offensive Hokie of the Game: Cam Phillips
There were some good offensive performances in this game, but Cam Phillips was the Hokies' best offensive playmaker on Saturday. Phillips broke Isaiah Ford's school record for receptions on his way to having 5 receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown. Phillips was somewhat quiet in this game, but found ways to be productive.
There's no doubt that it was encouraging to see that Phillips is healthy and though he may not be 100% yet, he should definitely be there by the time the Hokies travel to Miami in less than two weeks. Phillips continues to be one of the ACC's elite receivers with a solid performance two weeks after suffering a foot sprain against Boston College.
Coleman Fox came in during the second half and brought some excitement to the game with 7 carries for 58 yards and a 20-yard reception, bringing some excitement that has many wondering again if an earlier role could be coming for Fox. Travon McMillian had a solid game with 11 carries for 45 yards and a four-yard touchdown reception in the first half.
Defensive Hokie of the Game: Tim Settle and Ricky Walker
Once again, Virginia Tech's defensive tackles gave the opposing offensive line nightmares as Tim Settle and Ricky Walker were completely dominant in this game. When Settle and Walker were off the field, UNC was able to do some things but once Settle and Walker returned, UNC never had a chance to do anything up the middle.
Tim Settle had a game to remember with 5 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and 1 sack while constantly blowing up the UNC blocking within a matter of a second or two. Settle was overpowering in this game with UNC not having an answer for him at any point in this game. Settle is now tied for 26th in the nation in tackles for loss per game averaging 1.4 per game as one of the best defensive tackles in an ACC loaded with talented DTs.
Ricky Walker made some big plays as well with 4 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown that helped him earn ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors. Walker overwhelmed the UNC offensive line throughout his time on the field and like Settle, the Tar Heels had no answer for him in this game.
Greg Stroman didn't play a lot on defense, but was very good in coverage again this week while also returning a punt 91 yards for a touchdown in what was one of the best punt returns of the year. Trevon Hill gave UNC plenty of problems with 6 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 forced fumble while Andrew Motuapuaka led the Hokies with 9 tackles, an interception, and deflected a pass that led to a pick 6.. Reggie Floyd earned Co-ACC Defensive Back of the Week honors with 7 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and a pick 6.
Congrats to Cam Phillips, Tim Settle, and Ricky Walker on being our Hokies of the Game against North Carolina.
