After an 0-3 start and an end to the Brent Pry era, Virginia Tech has its most winnable game so far, taking on the 0-3 FCS Wofford Terriers in Lane Stadium. The Hokies are currently 35.5 point favorites. If the Hokies want to win by that much, the team will have to rely on some key players and position groups. Let's dive right in.
QB Kyron Drones
Phillip Montgomery is maintaining play calling responsibilities while taking on the responsibilities of interim head coach as well. That will force him to come down from the box and be the 'eyes in the sky' and begin calling plays from the field, which will be an adjustment, but he did the same thing at Tulsa.
With that, it will still all start with Kyron Drones. Drones has had a difficult start to the season, but had his most productive game against Old Dominion, albeit putting up those numbers in garbage time.
Last week, Drones totaled 331 yards with four touchdowns. He graded out with a 59.9 overall grade. While the offense has struggled so far this season, Montgomery feels it’s not about just one or two players struggling, but rather a more collective issue.
"We haven't lived up to some of the expectations offensively. We've got to grow as a group. In my opinion, that doesn't fall on one person," Phillip Montgomery said during his Tuesday presser, regarding quarterback play. "We've got to do it collectively as a group. We've got to continue to keep growing as an offense."
