On Sunday July 13th and Monday the 14th, the MLB draft took place. The Hokies had four players and a commit taken, so let’s dive into all that happened.

Aiden Robertson

Aiden Robertson, a transfer commit from Walter State Community College was the first to be drafted. He was picked in the 13th round by the Texas Rangers.

Robertson spent two years at Walters State, where he had a career 3.99 ERA and struck out nearly 13 per nine. If he makes it to campus, I fully expect him to be a weekend starter for the Hokies.

He told me that he has a set dollar figure in mind in order for him to sign. He was taken about three rounds later than his Baseball America ranking (287). The slot for 287 would be around the 200k range. The projected slot for a round 13 pick is maxed at 150k.

I do not know whether or not he will sign. I would give the Hokies somewhere from a 25-35% chance to bring him to campus.

Griffin Stieg

Griffin Stieg was selected in the 18th round at pick 542. He is committed in the portal to go to Alabama, so the Hokies do not have a dog in that fight. The bidding war will be between Alabama and the Seattle Mariners.

Mathieu Curtis

Matheiu Curtis is somebody that not many expected to get drafted, but he was the first Hokie off the board, going to the Braves in the 14th round.

Curtis had a 5.35 ERA during the 2025 season, but that doesn't tell the entire story. He was blown up a few times, but was very consistent and strong throughout the rest.

I would be beyond shocked if Curtis doesn't sign. He is 20 and will be 21 for the next draft. It becomes much harder to raise your draft stock after the age of 21, and there is no guarantee that he is as successful next year.

Andrew Sentlinger

The White Sox took Andrew Sentlinger to open up the 20th round. He missed the bulk of the 2025 season after injuring his throwing arm during the series at Wake Forest.

Much like Curtis, I completely expect Sentlinger to sign, especially coming off of an injury. There is no foresight on whether or not he will play next year.

If he were to return and not play, he would likely go undrafted and put himself in a very difficult situation to get drafted the following year, in 2027.

Jared Davis

Jared Davis was taken by the Athletics at pick #500. He had a solid year for the Hokies, primarily batting leadoff. Much like Curtis and Sentlinger, I think that Davis will sign with the Athletics.

I wouldn't be as shocked if he didn't, though. Coach John Szefc has referred to him as being a raw player, much like a freshman that has a lot of developing to do.

If Davis thinks that he can boost his draft stock substantially, there is a chance. I still see it as very unlikely.

Overview

Long story short, the draft treated the Hokies very well. As of now, they have retained C Henry Cooke, relief pitcher Luke Craytor and SS Clay Grady among others.

They will be looking to reload for a 2026 season, where they return a lot of production.

The Hokies were able to avoid having two recruits being drafted, Ethan Ball and Ethan Grim, who were both top 300 prospects according to Baseball America. Having your entire high school signing class remaining intact is always a victory.
