Virginia Tech Women's Basketball is already getting busy in the transfer portal, landing a commitment from Tennessee starting forward Alyssa Latham.

Latham comes to Virginia Tech after spending one season at Syracuse in 2023-24 and two seasons at Tennessee. She has one year of eligibility remaining. Virginia Tech is now at 13 players for the 2026-27 season, leaving two roster spots open at this time.

During this past season at Tennessee, she averaged 4.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.0 steals in 19.2 minutes per game while shooting 53.9% from the field. She played in 27 games for the Lady Vols, making 16 starts. During her standout freshman season at Syracuse, she averaged 8.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, and 1.2 steals in 27.6 minutes per game on her way to earning All-ACC Freshman honors.

Latham's advanced numbers from her time at Tennessee are quite strong as she had a box score plus/minus of 7.5 during the 2024-25 season and 7.8 during the 2025-26 season plus offensive ratings above 111 and defensive ratings below 94 each of those two seasons.

Latham is a proven rotational big at the major conference level who could easily come in and be Virginia Tech's starting center next season in a smaller lineup, similar to what VT did with Texas Tech transfer Kilah Freelon this past season. Rising sophomore Aniya Trent will likely push Latham for playing time, though the Tennessee transfer projects as the favorite to earn the starting center job as of now.

This is also a strong transfer portal victory for the Hokies being able to land a proven major conference player like the grad transfer Latham this early in the transfer portal cycle when only grad transfers are able to jump in. Ole Miss was also heavily involved with Latham and even hosted her on a visit before she ended up choosing VT today.
