Award watch list season has started this week with Tremaine Edmunds being named to the watch lists for the Bednarik Award and Nagurski Trophy while Joey Slate was named to the Lou Groza Award watch list. Today, a third Hokie received the honor of being named to a watch list for the best DBs in America. Senior cornerback Greg Stroman was one of 45 defensive backs named to the Jim Thorpe Award watch list for the first time in his collegiate career. Stroman emerged as one of the ACC's best defensive backs last season with 13 tackles, 3 interceptions, 10 pass breakups, a blocked field goal, and a punt return for a touchdown in 11 games and 9 starts. Stroman's impressive junior season earned him Second Team All-ACC honors from the coaches and Third Team All-ACC honors from the media. Stroman was consistently rated as one of the top ACC DBs by many in-depth stats and was quite reliable in every game he played in outside of his struggles against Tennessee. Stroman proved to be great in man coverage with quarterbacks rarely having success against him or even throwing his way with his great man coverage. Stroman absolutely deserved the honor but it is surprising to see him be the only Hokie DB to make this as VT had an elite trio of cornerbacks that also includes Brandon Facyson and Adonis Alexander while free safety Terrell Edmunds has a fairly good chance at earning Preseason All-ACC honors. Despite only one Hokie DB making it, there's no doubt that the Hokies have one of college football's elite secondaries that will give every opposing quarterback and offensive coordinator nightmares. Congrats to Greg Stroman on being named to the Jim Thorpe Award watch list.
