Fleming had this to say about his reaction to receiving a Virginia Tech offer.
"It was definitely a surreal moment. I was patiently waiting for them to offer because of the relationship I have with some of the coaches. They're great guys, but they are also family guys. Our talk wasn’t all about football, it was about how they can develop me into a good young man, inside and outside of football as well," Fleming said.
Fleming received the offer during a FaceTime with head coach Brent Pry, CBs coach Derek Jones (his potential collegiate position coach), and WRs coach Fontel Mines (one of Tech's primary Richmond area recruiters). He had this to say about how that conversation went as a whole.
"It was a good conversation. They were excited for me to be visiting on March 19th, but they didn’t hesitate to offer me before I got on campus," Fleming said.
Fleming told us that he has received lots of interest from Virginia Tech going back to December with the Hokies among 5 offers along with Tennessee, Minnesota, Marshall, and Kent State. Those offers shouldn't come as a surprise after Fleming had 50 tackles including 5 for loss, 4 interceptions, 12 pass deflections, and 2 forced fumbles plus over 500 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns on offense.
Fontel Mines and Derek Jones have both been playing big roles in Tech's pursuit with Fleming had this to say about his relationship with Fontel Mines.
"Very close, he’s really tight with my family and I," Fleming said.
He then had this to say about his relationship with Derek Jones.
"Very close, we have that same mentality when it comes to playing the defensive back position, and he’s now very close with my family and I," Fleming said.
Looking ahead, Cameren Fleming told us that he will be taking a visit to Blacksburg on March 19th. Additionally, he will be taking a visit to UNC this weekend per his Twitter though he may also be visiting JMU on March 6th as well as he previously told us. He will also be visiting Arkansas on March 12th, Virginia on March 26th, and Minnesota on April 2nd. Fleming is also looking to make trips to Tennessee, Penn State, and Florida State though he has no dates for those visits just yet.
So how does this offer impact his recruitment and where Virginia Tech stands in it?
"The offer is great. It’s an in-state school so that’s a factor. My recruitment just began, so my recruitment is open right now," Fleming said.
The offer, his production, and relationship with the coaches makes it clear that Cameren Fleming is poised to be one of Virginia Tech's top defensive back targets in the 2023 class with Tech already off to a strong start.
