Throughout the offseason, most expected that Josh Jackson would be Virginia Tech's starting quarterback in 2018 even if Justin Fuente wasn't ready to make it official. Today, Fuente made it official. Throughout the spring and early parts of fall camp, all signs have pointed towards Jackson being the guy given his experience and solid freshman season. Comments from Fuente and others have previously suggested that while it was an open competition at QB, it was always Jackson's job to lose. When asked about the decision today, Justin Fuente had this to say. "I don’t know if it would’ve had to have been spectacular, I don’t know what they would’ve had to have done. We divided reps and gave everyone an opportunity and we still feel like Josh is the best one for us and Josh has never batted an eye when we handled it like that. He hasn’t changed the way he’s gone about things. He’s earned that opportunity and he’ll be the guy," Fuente said. With this announcement making the expected official, Josh Jackson will have the opportunity to build on a solid debut season in which he was one of the best freshman QBs in the country throwing for 2,991 yards while having 20 touchdowns, 9 interceptions, and a 59.6% completion rate. In addition, Jackson was third on the team in rushing with 324 yards while leading the Hokies with 6 rushing touchdowns and earlier today, he was one of four ACC QBs named to the Manning Award Watch List. Jackson started the season off quite well with some big performances especially against West Virginia, but struggled without starting offensive tackle Yosuah Nijman during the month of November. Now with a full offseason under his belt, Jackson should be ready to take the next step in his development as an offensive leader. In addition, Jackson should also benefit from having an offense that returns 3 starters on the offensive line and almost every significant contributor at a skill position other than Cam Phillips and Travon McMillian.
