2021 DE Kelvin Gilliam was one of a few elite sophomores to visit Virginia Tech last week. By all accounts, the Highland Springs product enjoyed his time in Blacksburg. "It was great," Gilliam said of his visit. "Really got to know the campus and the coaches more." While seeing the campus for the first time is certainly impressive, Gilliam said it was his time with the coaches that impressed him the most during his visit. "The coaches were really attentive and they made me feel like I was at home," he recalls. During the visit, Gilliam had a full day. From touring campus, to meeting with coaches, to trying on uniforms, he feels like he got a great taste of what Virginia Tech is all about. One highlight of the visit was meeting with Virginia Tech DL Coach Charley Wiles. "He gave a lot of reasons why people come to Virginia Tech," said Gilliam of his meeting with Wiles. "He said people who went to Virginia Tech and left wish they could come back." It also helped that Gilliam and Wiles already had a previous connection. Derrick Hopkins, who serves as Gilliam's defensive line coach at Highland Springs, played under Coach Wiles at Virginia Tech. "With him coaching my defensive lineman coach, it's a really good relationship," Gilliam said of Wiles. Even though Gilliam is only a sophomore, he has received no shortage of interest from college football's Power 5 programs. Besides the Hokies, he currently holds offers from Georgia Tech, Michigan State, and Michigan. Before his visit and Michigan offer, Gilliam told us that Virginia Tech and Michigan State were his current top 2. The Highland Springs DE also told us recently that he plans on taking a visit to Michigan during his spring break. Virginia Tech is continuing to make a strong, early impression on 2021 star DE Kelvin Gilliam after another good visit to Blacksburg.
