Mike Young has had multiple former assistants go on to be head coaches at other programs including former Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton, current Winthrop head coach Mark Prosser, and current Appalachian State head coach Dustin Kerns.

Now for the second time, a member of one of Young's Virginia Tech staffs has earned a head coaching job.

Long-time Mike Young assistant Kevin Giltner has left Virginia Tech to become the head coach at Wofford immediately following the surprise dismissal of head coach Dwight Perry earlier this month due to rumored NCAA violations.

Giltner has been part of Virginia Tech's staff since Mike Young's arrival and was previously on Young's staff at Wofford for multiple seasons. He also played his collegiate basketball at Wofford, which certainly played a role in his decision to take this job.

He joins Mike Jones as former VT Mike Young assistants to land head coaching jobs, with Jones landing the ODU job after his time at VT and a brief stint as an assistant at Maryland.

Giltner landing a mid-major head coaching job has been coming for years with Wofford being linked with Giltner in previous coaching searches prior to hiring him this time. College basketball has a high level of respect for Mike Young and his offensive system, and Giltner has been the right hand man for Young in implementing his offensive system.

With Giltner taking the Wofford job now, Mike Young will have to move quickly to decide how he wants to replace him on his staff. An internal promotion for the season does seem very possible given how close we are to the season, though it isn't necessarily a certainty either as there is still well over a month till the new season begins.

If VT goes external, it wouldn't be surprising if Young looks for someone in his past coaching tree or an assistant who has lots of familiarity with Young and his offensive system given how important of a role that Giltner played in that realm.
