On Saturday, the Virginia Tech Hokies (2-4, 1-1 ACC) will get take on the #13 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5-0, 2-0 ACC) in Bobby Dodd Stadium at 3:30pm EST on the ACC Network. This is an important test for Virginia Tech, who is coming off a tough loss at the hands of Wake Forest one weekend ago and is looking to mount momentum of any kind going into their bye week. They hope to do so against a very talented and well-coached Georgia Tech team under head coach Brent Key that has ACC Championship and CFB Playoff hopes, and is looking to avoid a stunning upset that would seriously hurt those chances.
It will be an uphill battle for the Hokies; however, here are a few things that I think will be crucial to their chances of scoring the upset victory.
Offense
1. Turn Red Zone Trips Into Touchdowns
Virginia Tech, despite having an 87.5% red-zone scoring percentage, has gotten into the habit of settling for field goals, as several key drives have stalled inside the opposition's 40 yard line. Don't get me wrong, John Love is incredible and deserves all the credit in the world for his accuracy and 'clutch gene'. However, when one-third of your red-zone scoring is field goals (21/24 overall, 7/7 FG, 14 TD), it points toward some offensive inconsistency that needs to be fixed.
