No. 12 Virginia Tech Softball Routes Boston College in Series Sweep

Virginia Tech has now strung together its second ACC series sweep after thumping Boston College.

The Hokies (31-4, 7-2 ACC) outscored the Eagles 42-to-7 this past weekend. Virginia Tech’s offense continues to perform at a high level midway through the season.

Game 1: Virginia Tech 11, Boston College 0

The Hokies’ offense got off to a hot start, putting up four runs in the second inning. Gaby Mizelle got the team started with a solo shot. Rachel Castine added a run with a base hit, and then Jordan Lynch followed by blasting a two-run home run, doubling the score.

The Eagles threatened to score with the bases loaded, but Emma Mazzarone held them off as she got the start in the series opener.

After some back and forth between the two offenses, Virginia Tech added to its lead in the fifth. Mizelle started the rally with an RBI as an error by the Eagles’ defense led to a run coming across the plate. Castine and Mazzarone both notched an RBI single to make it a 7-0 lead.

An Addison Foster double brought in another runner followed by a Jordan Lynch three-run blast. That was the second home run of the game to make it 11-0. Mazzarone closed the game to secure the Hokies' win and the shutout in five innings.

Game 2: Virginia Tech 14, Boston College 4

The second game was the latter of the doubleheader on Friday, and the offense continued to click.

Nora Abromavage struck first with an RBI double, followed by Zoe Yaeger tallying an RBI on a groundout. Mizelle added one more run in the top of the first. Boston College responded with an RBI single and wild pitch to make it a one-score deficit.

Virginia Tech extended its lead, starting with an Abromavage three-run home run to double the score for Tech. Michelle Chatfield tallied a home run herself, making it a 7-2 lead. In the third Boston College’s defense gave up another run with a wild pitch.

Boston College’s Adrianna Martinez cut the lead in half with a two-run home run off Avery Layton, who got the start. Bree Caricco came in for relief following the home run and closed out the game.

The Hokies continued their high-scoring weekend with Foster bringing in two on a double. In the sixth, Kylie Aldridge started the inning off with a solo home run. Castine doubled to bring in another run. Tech got one more on the board with an infield hit to win 14-4 in six innings.

Game 1: Virginia Tech 11, Boston College 0

Emma Mazzarone got her second start of the series, and was given more outstanding offense in support.

Nora Abromavage got the party started again with a two-run home run in the first inning. In the second, the Hokies outdid any inning they’ve had so far, putting up 12 runs, tying the program record.

The rally got started with Castine knocking a two-RBI double. Jordan Lynch then homered for the third time in the series, bringing in three more runs. Two more runs were added by Aldridge and Mizelle.

Another Boston College wild pitch gave the Hokies another run. Foster brought in two runs by hitting a single. The Hokies' 12-run inning was capped off as Lynch doubled, bringing in another run to make it a 14-0 game in the second.

In the following inning, Hailey Luginbill made it 15 with an RBI single.

The Eagles found some offense in the third as Emma Knight doubled for two RBIs. Knight then crossed home plate to give the Eagles three runs.

In the fourth, Virginia Tech answered those three with two of their own. Jordan Lynch continued her outstanding series with an RBI double. The final run came as Lynch crossed the plate after Sarah McNelly put the ball in play.

Tech put the final touches on a 17-3 win, run-ruling Boston College in all three games.

The Hokies now stand at 31-4 and come back to Blacksburg to face Clemson in a three-game series. Game one kicks begins at 6 p.m. on Friday evening.
