Announced fittingly at 1:00 PM on the Monday before the Hokies' season opener at Boston College, the new tradition of wearing the No. 1 jersey for Virginia Tech football will start with Reggie Floyd.

The Hokies announced earlier on Monday that the jersey number would go to a player-voted leader of the team that plays hard off the field, an alpha male and someone who represents the team well on and off the field.

Unlike honoring legendary head coach Frank Beamer with choosing a player to don the number 25 jersey every week, Tech announced this will be a season-long honor.

Floyd is one of five seniors on this year's Hokies team and was named as a captain for the team last year.

The Manassas, Va., native ranked second in tackles on the team last season with 88, along with 9.5 tackles for loss.

Floyd has played in 38 of 40 games in his three seasons so far in Blacksburg, starting 25 of them as the Hokies' starting rover the past two seasons.
