Virginia Tech stunned just about everyone on Saturday night when they on the road to Raleigh and beat NC State 23-21 led by a career-high 174 rushing yards from Terion Stewart. With that said, let's dive into my takeaways from the Hokies' upset victory over NC State.
1. A Healthy Terion Stewart is a Problem For Opponents
Any conversation about this game has to start with the incredible performance that Terion Stewart delivered.
This was more than just one long 85-yard run (the seventh longest in Hokie history) as he ran for 174 yards on 15 carries, routinely breaking tackles and having seven double-digit yard gains to keep the chains moving. Stewart was the impetus that got Virginia Tech's offense going after a languid, pass-heavy first few drives.
The advanced numbers are even more impressive as Stewart forced 11 missed tackles, which is more than any VT running back has done this decade, while also generating 153 yards after contact for an average of 10.2 yards per carry after contact.
After the game, interim head coach Philip Montgomery shared about how impressed he's been by Stewart in persevering through early season injury and now making a big impact.
