He is the second recruit to formally decommit from Virginia Tech since the dismissal of Brent Pry along with four-star OT Thomas Wilder out of the 757.
Gillespie's departure leaves the Hokies with nine total 2026commitments including two defensive line commitments from four-star DL Andrew Rogers and three-star DE Kamren Johnson. Both of those commitments appear shaky at best as Rogers has visited Tennessee and is visiting NC State soon while Johnson posted on X that his recruitment is "open" while remaining committed to VT as of now.
Gillespie will certainly have plenty of interest especially after he was dominant as a junior with 61 tackles including 25 for loss with eight sacks according to MaxPreps.
Any decommitment at this point is not a surprise given the staff changes that have happened and will be happening later on this fall. There's also not a whole lot that the Hokies can do about it at this point until a new head coach is in place likely right after the end of the regular season.
