Virginia Tech Among Loads of Fast Power 5 Interest for Kent State WR Devontez Walker

Cheerleader Fans 1 VT Wofford 2022 TS

Kent State WR Devontez Walker entered the transfer portal earlier today and instantly became one of the top WRs available in the transfer portal drawing loads of interest from Power 5 programs.

Virginia Tech is among the schools who have already expressed their interest in Walker with WRs coach Fontel Mines reaching out to him. Walker told us that it was a "good" conversation that he had with Mines.

The Hokies are far from the only school to have shown interest in Walker with the Kent State standout telling me that the following schools had contacted him within his first couple hours being in the transfer portal.

  • ACC: Virginia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Syracuse
  • Big 10: Indiana, Penn State, Rutgers
  • SEC: Mississippi State, South Carolina, Tennessee

Safe to say, Walker is going to be a major transfer portal target which shouldn't surprise anyone after the 6'3'' Charlotte, NC native had a big season with 58 receptions for 921 yards and 11 touchdowns. Those impressive numbers unsurprisingly earned him All-MAC First Team honors as one of the most dominant playmakers in the conference.

Walker also played well against tough non-conference competition having 7 catches for 106 yards and a touchdown against #1 Georgia plus 4 catches for 56 yards and a touchdown against a Washington team that finished the season ranked in the top 15.

Walker has two years of eligibility though there is a chance he could even have a third year as his situation is similar in some ways to former VT QB Jason Brown. He started his career out in 2020 at NC Central but like Brown, Walker didn't have a season and then transferred to Kent State.

One thing that could help teams like VT and others in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast is the fact that Walker is from Charlotte. While proximity to home usually isn't as big a factor in transfer recruitments, it definitely can be a small factor that helps at minimum.

Obviously, things are extremely early in his recruitment but Devontez Walker is going to be one of the top WRs in the transfer portal in America with the Hokies understandably reaching out to him.
