Old Dominion and Virginia Tech have agreed to a new football scheduling arrangement, canceling over half of the previously scheduled games on the future calendar.

Under the new structure, Virginia Tech will host ODU in 2025, 2026, and 2030, while the previously scheduled oad games in 2027, 2029, and 2031, along with the Blacksburg matchup in 2028, have been officially cancelled.

In exchange, ODU will receive guaranteed game payments for its visits to Virginia Tech across multiple sports. The payout is approximately 2.7 million per David Teel of the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Additionally, Virginia Tech has agreed to host Old Dominion in a men's basketball game within the next three seasons.

VT athletics director Whit Babcock released the following statement on the restructured contract.

“As we continue to evaluate and align our future non-conference schedules with the evolving landscape of college football, we’ve made a strategic decision—mutually agreed upon by both programs—to alter the number of games in the series,” said Babcock. “We’re grateful for the competitive games we’ve shared and we appreciate the flexibility and partnership from Old Dominion as we work to adapt in this new environment.”

The scheduling shuffling isn't a major surprise given what Brent Pry said just last week at ACC Kickoff to our own Tim Thomas and other local media.

"We've got to rework some things. Mike Hazel and myself and Whit Babcock and Danny White have all kind of worked on it We've got some adjustments that are all about to be final, a couple of things to give us some more flexibility to make sure the schedule," Pry said.

It's unclear if this will be the only change that will be announced before the start of the season, though the Hokies definitely have some work to do now with openings on their non-conference schedule starting in 2027.
