Virginia Tech is preparing to leave Lane Stadium for the first time this season, and Wednesday’s media availability offered a look at some of the biggest storylines surrounding the Hokies before their trip to Maryland.
Head coach James Franklin, quarterbacks coach Danny O’Brien, linebacker Noah Chambers and center Kyle Altuner spoke with the media, touching on everything from Virginia Tech’s improving health along the offensive line to Ethan Grunkemeyer’s development, Chambers’ growing role in the defense and the significance of returning home for several Hokies.

Kyle Altuner Expected Back at Center
Virginia Tech should get a key piece of its offensive line back against Maryland's elite pass rush.
Franklin said starting center Kyle Altuner could have played against Old Dominion, but the Hokies elected to give him another week to recover with the expectation that he would be fully healthy for Maryland.
“We actually had him for last week, but he wasn't 100 percent, and we felt if we could hold him out last week, then we would have him for 100 percent this week,” Franklin said. “We expect him to be full go.”
Altuner's importance goes beyond simply getting another starter back.
Franklin described him as a leader and “culture driver” who is responsible for much of the communication along Virginia Tech’s offensive line. With Montavious Cunningham also avoiding suspension, the Hokies are back to their preferred starting five.
“I'd make the argument [he’s] the captain of our offensive line, just in terms of what the offensive center has to do in terms of communication and getting everything started,” Franklin said. “I think it's significant.”
Altuner said the injury was relatively minor despite the concerning way it occurred, when another player fell into his leg. He also praised Tommy Ricard for stepping in during his absence.
“He did great, man. I'm really proud of him,” Altuner said. “He's always been a strong kid and he's always ready. Very smart kid. So I was really proud of how he handled that.”
Altuner’s return comes at an important time. Maryland presents a talented defensive front, particularly on the edges, and Virginia Tech allowed four sacks against Old Dominion.
Franklin said the Hokies plan to help their tackles with chips from tight ends and receivers while emphasizing the importance of staying ahead of the chains.
