Lummus was the bullpen coach for Texas last year, who hosted a regional.
As the bullpen coach at Texas, Lummus specialized in analytics to best outline individual and team patterns and paths for success. His knowledge of advanced scouting metrics will help the Hokies with the pitching lab that they have.
VT previously hired Doug Willey as their pitching coach, who also has a tenured history in advanced pitching analytics. It seems like that may be where the Hokies are trying to go with their coaching staff, at least on the pitching side.
Lummus spent a five-year career at Texas, but he only played in two of those (2023, 2024). During that time, Lummus appeared in 26 games where he had a 4.54 ERA across 37 2/3 innings and 32 strikeouts.
Head coach John Szefc shared the following statement about the hire of Lummus.
"We are excited to welcome Chase to our staff,” said Head Coach John Szefc. “He has incredible experience coming from the University of Texas, where he most recently served as bullpen coach under distinguished pitching coach Max Weiner."
Including his 2025 season on the coaching staff, Lummus helped Texas post a record of 233-102 (.696) while making the tournament in five out of five years. Along with that, they posted three Super Regional appearances and two trips to the Men’s College World Series.
Lummus is a fascinating hire who is just getting started in the business, but definitely knows what winning at a consistently high level looks like, something that is always a plus for any program to add.
