Brett Renfrow is heading to Minnesota.

The Virginia Tech right-hander was selected 74th overall by the Minnesota Twins on Saturday in the competitive balance round of the 2026 MLB Draft, becoming the latest Hokie to hear his name called on draft weekend.

Over three seasons in Virginia Tech's starting rotation, Renfrow threw 222.2 innings, striking out 250 batters against 91 walks and finishing with a 4.49 ERA. The numbers don't fully capture how his junior season unfolded. After a rough April—he carried a 6.92 ERA through his first two starts of the month—Renfrow was one of the better pitchers in the country down the stretch, going 33.1 innings with a 1.89 ERA, 35 strikeouts and just 11 walks to close out his Virginia Tech career. He finished with 88 punchouts across 73.2 innings on the year, a 27.7 percent strikeout rate that reflected growth in his ability to miss bats.

The stuff backs it up. Renfrow works with an over-the-top release and good extension, sitting 94 mph with the fastball and touching 97. His best secondary is a cutter-slider hybrid in the mid-80s that has the makings of a swing-and-miss pitch as he sharpens his command. He also carries a curveball with depth in the low 80s and a changeup with good horizontal action.

Minnesota viewed Renfrow as a good fit for what the organization looks for. The Twins described him as a strike-throwing right-hander with a full mix of pitches they believe they can enhance once he signs. He figures to open his professional career with High-A Cedar Rapids, with a path to Double-A Wichita if things go well. At 21 with three years of ACC experience already in his back pocket, the expectation is that he moves quickly.
