The Hokies (30-24) open their tournament against the 3-seed Cal Poly (36-22) at 8 p.m. ET on Friday, May 29. On the other side of the bracket, the overall top seed in the nation, UCLA (51-6), squares off against No. 4 Saint Mary's (34-25).
The Hokies enter the fray coming off a mixed performance in the ACC tournament this past weekend, in which they outlasted Notre Dame but came up short against North Carolina in the quarterfinals. Virginia Tech remains among the hottest teams in the country, rattling off 14 wins in its final 20 contests, claiming four consecutive ACC series victories against Pitt, NC State, Cal, and Clemson before the conference tournament.
This convincing stretch, coupled with a slate of impressive metrics, including ranking 17th nationally in strength of schedule, 42nd in NCAA RPI, and earning 13 total Quadrant I/II wins, ultimately punched the Hokies' ticket.
On the field, head coach John Szefc's team is led by starting pitcher Brett Renfrow, who, after a historic season, earned Second Team All-ACC honors with a 5-4 record, 3.65 ERA, and 86 strikeouts. Behind Renfrow, 2026 ACC All-Freshman recipient Ethan Ball has paced the Hokies all season, hitting 17 doubles and 16 home runs with a 1.067 OPS, while Ethan Gibson boasts the squad's highest batting average (.333).
Virginia Tech was last selected to the NCAA Tournament in 2022, when it earned the No. 4 national seed and swept the Blacksburg regional before falling to Oklahoma in its only ever Super Regional. The Maroon and Orange boasts a record of 13-22 in the NCAA Tournament all-time.
