BLACKSBURG, Va. — Virginia Tech's undefeated start to the 2026 season came to a heartbreaking end Friday night, as the Hokies fell 35-33 to Pittsburgh at Lane Stadium. However, despite the loss, Virginia Tech remains firmly in the postseason picture, with national outlets continuing to project the Hokies to play in December.
Now sitting at 4-1 through five games, Virginia Tech needs just two more victories to reach bowl eligibility in James Franklin's first season. The Hokies' strong start has significantly changed expectations from the preseason, when simply reaching a bowl game was considered a reasonable goal.
With the first loss now behind them, the question becomes how much the defeat has impacted Virginia Tech's postseason outlook.
The latest projections from ESPN, CBS Sports and Athlon Sports offer several potential destinations for the Hokies, ranging from El Paso to Orlando.
CBS Sports: Sun Bowl vs. Arizona
CBS Sports' Brad Crawford projects Virginia Tech to face Arizona in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas.
Interestingly, Crawford moved the Hokies up following their first loss of the season. After initially projecting Virginia Tech to the Gator Bowl, Crawford dropped the Hokies to the Fenway Bowl following their victory over Boston College.
Now, despite the loss to Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech finds itself in a more prominent postseason matchup.
The Sun Bowl would provide the Hokies with an opportunity to face a Big 12 opponent and potentially finish Franklin's first season with nine or more victories, depending on how the remainder of the regular season unfolds.
Athlon Sports: Sun Bowl vs. Arizona
Athlon Sports' Steven Lassan agrees with Crawford, projecting Virginia Tech to face Arizona in the Sun Bowl.
The projection represents a change from previous weeks, when Athlon had Virginia Tech facing Iowa in the Duke's Mayo Bowl in Charlotte.
Lassan's updated projection, released Oct. 4, places the Hokies in El Paso alongside several other ACC programs competing for prominent postseason destinations.
For Virginia Tech, the move illustrates how much the conference's bowl picture has shifted through five weeks, particularly with Clemson and other traditional ACC contenders experiencing early-season struggles.
ESPN: Two Different Destinations
ESPN's Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach have differing opinions on Virginia Tech's postseason destination.
Bonagura agrees with CBS Sports and Athlon, projecting the Hokies to face Arizona in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31.
Schlabach, however, has Virginia Tech heading to Orlando to face Houston in the Pop-Tarts Bowl on Dec. 29 at Camping World Stadium.
The Pop-Tarts Bowl would arguably represent the most desirable destination thus far, featuring an ACC-Big 12 matchup in one of the postseason's more recognizable non-playoff games.
Schlabach's projection remains unchanged following Virginia Tech's loss to Pittsburgh, suggesting that the Hokies still have an opportunity to secure one of the ACC's better bowl placements despite their first setback.
Where Virginia Tech Stands
With three of the four projections from ESPN, Athlon Sports and CBS Sports pointing toward the Sun Bowl, El Paso has emerged as the most common projected destination for Virginia Tech entering Week 6.
The Hokies still have seven regular-season games remaining, including challenging road matchups against Clemson, SMU and Miami.
An eight-win finish would represent significant progress after Virginia Tech's 3-9 campaign in 2025, while nine or more victories could put the Hokies in contention for an even more attractive postseason opportunity.
For now, the national projections suggest that Virginia Tech remains on track for a meaningful bowl appearance in Franklin's first season, even after Friday's disappointing defeat.
And with the Hokies just two victories away from bowl eligibility, the question is increasingly becoming not whether Virginia Tech will reach the postseason, but where it will spend the final weeks of December.
