Claeys joined the staff this past offseason as the LBs coach under new defensive coordinator Justin Hamilton. The addition of Claeys gave Hamilton a veteran coach who had plenty of Power 5 head coach and defensive coordinator experience.
As mentioned above, assistant Jack Tyler is expected to be promoted to replace Claeys as the LBs coach. Virginia Tech has declined comment on Tyler being the expected replacement for Claeys.
Tyler was a top candidate for the opening this past offseason prior to the hiring of Claeys. He was also the defensive playcaller against Duke with Justin Hamilton and Ryan Smith unavailable, and is thought of very highly by those around the program.
Update
Virginia Tech has announced that Jack Tyler has been promoted to be Virginia Tech's next LBs coach.
Congrats, Jack Tyler
