Johnson is the sixth Hokie to enter the transfer portal this spring along with LB Jayden McDonald, DE Jorden McDonald, QB Davi Belfort, OT Web Davidson, and OL Caleb Nitta. He will have three years of eligibility remaining at his next school.
Johnson earned a backup cornerback job as a true freshman for the Hokies, accumulating seven tackles while operating as CB3 primarily.
However, Tech decided to move Johnson to safety after that season with that move not going nearly as well as hoped and Johnson falling significantly down the depth chat. After redshirting this past season, Johnson was further buried on the safety depth and has decided to move on and find a fresh start elsewhere.
With Johnson's departure, the Hokies are now at 103 players based on my accounting, two players below the 105-man roster limit.
