As first reported by On3, Virginia Tech veteran backup defensive end CJ McCray has entered the transfer portal.
During his four seasons at Virginia Tech, McCray had 45 tackles including 5.5 sacks while working as a backup defensive end in 2022, 2023, and to start 2024. However, McCray fell behind younger defensive ends like Aycen Stevens and Jason Abbey, likely leading to this decision to move on. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
McCray could have been able to earn a role in the DE rotation again, but his best chances of playing time is likely elsewhere at this point. He's proven to be a solid pass rusher with 35 pressures during the 2022 and 2023 season but wasn't as good as a run defender and wasn't always the most consistent player. He could be a dynamic edge rusher at a lower level and likely will have tons of suitors from the Group of 5 ranks.
McCray's departure doesn't really change the math for the Hokies, who are looking to 1-2 defensive ends this cycle. They did land a commitment from Hampton's Jahzari Priester, but there's a good chance he ends up at defensive tackle given his size and he's not someone who likely will contribute next year for VT.
