After having loads of success recruiting the Richmond area during the 2023 class, Virginia Tech is looking to continue that in the 2024 cycle with three-star WR Eric Smith of Varina HS being a major Richmond target of theirs.
So far, the Hokies are building some strong relationships with Smith who told us that Tech is doing a "great job" of recruiting him. Head coach Brent Pry has been part of the group for the Hokies building some of the best relationships with Smith. He had this to say about his relationship with Pry.
"It's a great relationship and very wholesome, never a bad time with Coach Pry," Smith said.
WRs coach Fontel Mines is also playing a large role in recruiting Smith as you would expect with the three-star WR having a really good relationship with Mines as he told us.
"It's a great relationship. I've known him since he was at ODU, and he was the one who offered me at ODU!" Smith said.
Two other people playing a large role in recruiting Smith are Assistant Director of Player Personnel Alex Jones and defensive coordinator Chris Marve. Now Marve is likely a surprise given that he's not in one of Marve's regions nor is he a defensive player but Marve has built a strong relationship with Smith which seems to be providing an extra boost for Tech.
"Me and coach Marve have a great relationship even being that I am an offensive player. He always picks my brain and checks on me and my family," Smith said.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that Smith is receiving lots of interest as though he was on a Varina team with loads of WR talent, Smith still made lots of plays telling us that he had "around 10 touchdowns and 600 yards" this past season.
Looking ahead, Smith told us that he will be visiting Virginia Tech for their Big Dawg Junior Day on Monday, January 23rd with that being the only visit he currently has scheduled.
The Hokies are putting in the work and building some strong relationships with three-star WR Eric Smith who could be part of another strong class out of Richmond this cycle for VT.
