Virginia Tech baseball has agreed to a contract extension with head coach John Szefc that will keep him in Blacksburg through the 2030 season, the program announced Wednesday.
Szefc has served as Virginia Tech's head coach since 2018 and has helped turn the Hokies into a consistent contender in the ACC. Through nine seasons in Blacksburg, Szefc has accumulated 253 victories with the program while posting a .558 winning percentage.
Virginia Tech has also reached the 30-win mark in five consecutive seasons dating back to 2022, a stretch that has included multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and some of the most successful seasons in program history.
The Hokies returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2026 after finishing the regular season at 30-26 overall and 15-15 in ACC play. Virginia Tech earned the No. 2 seed in the Los Angeles Regional, where its season ultimately ended following losses to Cal Poly and UCLA.
Szefc's tenure has been highlighted by Virginia Tech's breakthrough 2022 campaign. The Hokies won their first ACC Coastal Division championship, earned the No. 4 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and hosted an NCAA Regional for the first time in program history.
Virginia Tech went on to win the Blacksburg Regional and advance to the program's first NCAA Super Regional. Szefc was named ACC Coach of the Year following the historic season.
Athletic director Brian White expressed confidence in the direction of the program while announcing the extension, pointing toward Szefc's ability to build Virginia Tech into a consistent postseason contender and develop players in Blacksburg.
The extension provides additional stability for a program that will enter 2027 looking to make another run in the ACC and return to the NCAA Tournament. Virginia Tech will bring back several important pieces from last season's roster, including standout Ethan Ball, as Szefc begins his 10th season leading the Hokies.
