Prior to his time in Blacksburg, Pry was the defensive coordinator under James Franklin at Penn State from 2016-2021, in which Penn State went 55-23 overall. Arguably Pry’s best defense was fielded during the 2021 season, in which they gave up 17.31 points per game (ranked seventh in the nation), 199.8 pass yards per game on 5.91 pass yards per attempt, and 152.7 rush yards per game on 3.8 rush yards per attempt. That same year, according to Sports Illustrated, Pry led the Nittany Lions to the fourth-ranked red zone defense at 66.7% and the eighth ranked unit in defensive efficiency at 111.98.
