This year’s captain consists of all seniors: S Divine Deablo, OL Tyrell Smith, DT Jarrod Hewitt, and LB Rayshard Ashby.
This will mark the second consecutive season where Deablo and Smith have been voted captains by their teammates.
Ashby was one of the best linebackers in the ACC last season earning the most ACC linebacker of the week titles with five. His 2019 campaign landed him on the All-ACC Second Team and he earned a spot on the 2020 Preseason All-ACC Team.
Deablo is coming off a career-best season after recording 84 tackles for the Hokies in 2019 in his second year as a starter. He earned the title of ACC Defensive Back of the Week once last season after a dominant performance against Notre Dame.
Hewitt is also coming off a career-best season with the Hokies during which he registered 33 tackles including 6.5 for loss, 4 of which were sacks. He also started all 13 games last season after starting 10 of 11 games he appeared in during the 2018 season.
Smith’s 2019 season ended abruptly after four games due to a foot injury he suffered against Duke. Now entering his sixth year in Blacksburg, Smith has played 44 games for Virginia Tech and is looking forward to completing an entire season with the Hokies this year.
