Check out the latest Virginia Tech football recruiting notes including the latest on one of VT's top overall 2021 targets and more.

4* LB Jordan Poole

After previously looking at making his commitment on July 1st, four-star LB Jordan Poole tweeted out today that he has decided to postpone his commitment.

Poole previously released a top 3 that included the Hokies, N.C. State, and South Carolina with the Hokies and in-state Wolfpack considered the two favorites for him.

While his decision date has been delayed, our sourcing continues to points towards Virginia Tech as being the slight favorite over N.C. State in his recruitment. Tech has prioritized Poole heavily and can definitely offer a clear path to early playing time at the mike linebacker given VT's largely older linebacking corps currently.

The Hokies also have the benefit of the fact that they have hosted Poole on multiple visits including earlier this year with the new defensive coaches, including LBs coach Tracy Claeys, in place.

Poole may be delaying his decision, but Virginia Tech right at the forefront of Poole's recruitment as they push to land the talented linebacker from Oakboro, NC.

3* ATH Martin Lucas

Three-star SWVA athlete Martin Lucas is down to six schools with Virginia Tech among those to make the cut.

The Hokies were joined by Arizona State, Old Dominion, Marshall, Coastal Carolina, and Villanova in his top 6. The Hokies and Monarchs have not offered Lucas to date though both are strongly evaluating him.

Lucas told us that the Hokies made the cut because he "grew up being a Tech fan" and because "it's close to home." Additionally, Lucas has plenty of connection to Virginia Tech as his uncle played for the Hokies as he previously discussed with us.

Lucas is an intriguing at 6'3'' and 240 pounds who could end up at both running back and tight end for Virginia Tech should the Hokies decide to pursue. A hybrid role between running back and h-back could be a particularly good fit for Lucas in Tech's offense, similar to how Dalton Keene was used at times as a blocker, runner, and receiver.

It is unique to see Tech make the top 6 for a player they haven't offered, but it goes to show how good of a position the Hokies could be in if they offer Martin Lucas.

2022 3* QB Gavin Wimsatt

Three-star dual-threat QB Gavin Wimsatt is a name to keep an eye on in the 2022 class with Wimsatt appearing to be fairly high up the board for the Hokies.

Wimsatt told us that he is in contact with Virginia Tech "every week or 2" with offensive coordinator/QBs coach Brad Cornelsen leading the charge. The two have built a "nice" relationship discussing both "football and everyday life" in their conversations as Wimsatt told us.

Wimsatt definitely fits the pass-first, dual-threat mold that Virginia Tech prefers in quarterbacks after throwing for 2,792 yards and 31 touchdowns while running for 564 yards and 12 touchdowns. That type of success has helped Wimsatt rise to being ranked as the sixth best dual-threat QB and fourth best recruit in Kentucky in the 2022 class for 247 Sports.
